HELENA, Mont. — Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen thanked staff in the Secretary of State’s Office and candidates across Montana for a successful 2024 candidate filing period. Secretary Jacobsen officially closed the 2024 candidate filing period at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 11.
“Congratulations on a wonderful candidate filing season, and thank you to all the candidates who chose to run and serve Montana,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “Thank you to our staff in the Secretary of State’s Office for their professionalism in serving the candidates, assisting with their filings, and doing an overall outstanding job.”
The Secretary of State’s Office processed nearly 450 candidate filings between January 11 and March 11, with more than 50 of those coming on the final day. More than 300 filings were processed for seats in the Montana legislature, which will next convene in January 2025.
Montana electors will cast votes for a variety of races in 2024, including statewide offices, congressional offices, and within their legislative districts.
“As the 2024 elections draw near, I encourage eligible Montana voters to confirm their registration information is accurate and up to date. Let’s get vote ready today, Montana,” said Secretary Jacobsen.
Results for candidates filing with the Secretary of State’s Office can be found on the 2024 Candidate Filings website. Local candidates file with the county election office.
Montana’s Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, June 4, while the General Election will be Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
U.S. SENATE and U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Three races for seats in Washington D.C. will appear on ballots this year, with each of Montana’s Congressional seats (MT-01 and MT-02) and one U.S. Senate seat available. Eight candidates filed for the U.S. Senate seat, including the incumbent.
Five candidates, including the incumbent, are listed in the MT-01 Congressional race, while a total of 13 candidates filed for the MT-02 race. That Congressional race drew the most candidates filing with the Secretary of State’s Office.
STATEWIDE “LAND BOARD” OFFICES
Nearly 20 candidates filed for the five statewide executive officials that serve on the Montana Land Board – Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Auditor, and State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The incumbents filed in the races for Governor, Attorney General, and Secretary of State.
In total, five candidates filed for Governor and State Auditor, while three filed for the other three offices.
PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION
Three Public Service Commission seats will be voted on this year – District 2, District 3, and District 4. A total of nine candidates filed to run for PSC, including four in the District 3 race, three in District 2, and a pair of candidates in District 4.
MONTANA SUPREME COURT
Three positions serving Montanans on the Supreme Court will appear on the ballot – the Chief Justice, Justice No. 3, and the Clerk of the Supreme Court.
Three candidates filed for the Supreme Court Chief Justice position, while three more officially entered the race for the Justice No. 3 seat. A total of five candidates, including the incumbent, filed for the Clerk of the Supreme Court.
DISTRICT COURT JUDGES
Multiple district court judge races will be presented to voters across Montana this year, with 41 total candidates filing for those various positions. Twenty-eight incumbents filed through the Secretary of State’s Office, and the District 2, Department 1 race drew the most candidates with four.
MONTANA LEGISLATURE
At the conclusion of the candidate filing period, 310 candidates filed to serve in the Montana Legislature. The majority of the 125 legislative races set to appear on the ballot drew more than one candidate.
In the Montana Senate, SD21, SD38, and SD44 attracted the most candidates, four, while several other races drew three candidates.
Filings for the Montana House included six candidates in HD23, while HD79 has five candidates. Several other races drew four candidates.
