HELENA, Mont. — Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen announced new business registrations climbed again in May. Roughly 5,400 new businesses registered with the Secretary of State’s Office during the month according to the Secretary of State’s Montana Business Economic Report.
New business growth has been a trend in Montana since 2021. Secretary Jacobsen cut registration fees in half for Montana businesses, while several other fees were waived entirely. As a result, Montana had record business growth in 2022, with approximately 53,000 businesses registering with the Secretary of State’s Office.
Montana businesses also have 24/7 access to their business filings through the Secretary of State’s website.
“I’m proud of the work our office does in helping new businesses register in Montana,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “By cutting fees and removing government deterrents, businesses are able to get registered quicker and easier so they can continue on their journey of serving their community.”
Secretary Jacobsen recently received the Mountain States Policy Center’s “Elevation Award” for leading the effort to reduce red tape and make it easier to do business in Montana. According to the MSPC, the Elevation Award is the highest honor of the organization, “given to individual(s) who are committed to advancing and elevating free market principles and ideas. It is presented to a top innovator, business leader, or elected official in Idaho, Montana, and Washington.”
Secretary Jacobsen recently thanked all Montana businesses following the annual report filing season. She also recognized the importance of the state’s local businesses during National Small Business Week. Secretary Jacobsen was proud to highlight one business each day in the Montana Business Spotlight series.
“Montana’s small businesses are so important to the local economy and the communities they serve,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “I’m honored to visit with these businesses and hear about their journey and the friends and neighbors they serve.”
“Thank you for doing business in Montana,” she added.
