HELENA, Mont. — Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen said roughly 4,900 new businesses registered with the Secretary of State’s Office in September, while almost 5,500 more registered in October, according to the Montana Business Economic Report. In total, more than 10,000 new business registrations were filed in September and October.
“Several new customers visited our office to register their business in the last two months, while many more took advantage of our 24/7 online filing system. Our team was honored to serve them all in this exciting first step of their business journey,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “Montana remains an excellent place to start a new business, and we’re proud to be a partner in making it easier and less expensive to do business in our great state.”
Montana has had more new registrations in eight of 10 months this year compared to 2023.
Secretary Jacobsen recently announced she is once again waiving the fee for all Montana businesses filing their annual reports by the 2025 deadline (January 1 – April 15, 2025). The fee waiver will again result in millions of dollars in savings for Montana businesses.
Earlier this year, Montana’s Legislative Audit Committee praised Secretary Jacobsen and the Secretary of State’s Office for letting “businesses be businesses in Montana while continuing to save them money.”
“I would like to say, ‘Thank you.’ It’s great when government can actually work for the people and give the people back their money, or not charge them for something,” said Senate President and Legislative Audit Committee Chair Jason Ellsworth during the meeting.
Secretary Jacobsen has previously cut and eliminated several other fees, leading to record new business registrations in each of her first three years in office. Approximately 60,000 new businesses registered with the Secretary of State’s Office in 2023, and Montana is on pace to break that record again this year.
“We’re grateful to our hard-working Montana businesses for their dedication, innovation, and commitment to our local communities,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “These businesses are the backbone of Montana’s success, and we thank you for doing business in Montana.”
