FORT HARRISON, Mont. — Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen helped commence the week of events for the 2024 Montana American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State. Secretary Jacobsen was a featured speaker on Monday, visiting with students from across the state.
“Boys and Girls State are two respected programs that educate our youth on important topics, from civics to elections and from leadership to patriotism,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “It was an honor to visit with our great state’s future voters and leaders.”
Secretary Jacobsen spoke to attendees about the Secretary of State’s roles and responsibilities, highlighting the various divisions within the Office—Elections & Voter Services, Business Services, Notary Services, Administrative Rules, and Records Management. She also explained her role on the Montana Land Board, discussing the numerous votes to expand and protect public access while generating millions of dollars in revenue for Montana schools.
Students had the chance to ask Secretary Jacbosen various questions about Montana elections, the legislative process, and the day-to-day tasks as Secretary of State.
Secretary Jacobsen shared the voter registration process, pointing to the recently unveiled Montana Election Education Video Series. She also announced the 2024 Secretary of State Constitution Contest and YouthVote Program, which will be held this fall.
“It was great to see so many of these students who plan to participate in our Montana elections, some as soon as this November’s General Election,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “Several others indicated an interest in running for public office or working for the state. It’s wonderful for them to receive this great opportunity with Montana’s Boys and Girls State, and I’m excited to see their successful futures.”
Throughout the week, attendees of the Montana American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State will learn about local, county, and state government operations by holding their own elections, meetings, legislative sessions, and court proceedings, among other events.
