HELENA, Mont. — Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen filed a resolution into law that brings collegiate shooting sports one step closer to reality in Montana colleges.
Senate Joint Resolution 7 (SJ 7) from Senator John Fuller (SD-4) urges the Montana Board of Regents and University System to adopt shooting sports competitions as collegiate sports. The bipartisan resolution would also provide endowments and scholarships for student-athletes participating in shooting sports.
Secretary Jacobsen expressed support for SJ 7 on its journey through the 69th Legislature and urged lawmakers to pass the resolution in testimony supporting the bill.
“I strongly support our Second Amendment rights and all of the educational, extracurricular, and economic opportunities that collegiate shooting sports would bring to the state of Montana,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “Montana has a long history of decorated competitive shooters, and this legislation would allow these homegrown standouts to earn scholarships and win competitions for our Montana schools.”
“Collegiate shooting sports would also enhance Montana’s economy,” Secretary Jacobsen continued. “Such events would attract visitors to local businesses and support our state’s firearm, shooting, and ammunition manufacturers.”
