HELENA, Mont. — Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen joined Montanans in the rotunda of the State Capitol on Tuesday to celebrate Constitution Day, which is recognized each September 17 to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.
The Oro Fino Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) hosted the event.
“Today is a day of celebration and honor as we come together to recognize the United States Constitution, a powerful defender of our God-given rights, champion of freedom and liberty, and advocate for civic engagement,” said Secretary Jacobsen.
Speaking to constituents and fellow elected officials, Secretary Jacobsen discussed the importance of civic engagement and voting, reminding Montanans that September is National Voter Registration Month and Tuesday was also National Voter Registration Day. She encouraged Montanans to visit Montana’s voter resources website, VoteMT.gov, and to utilize the Montana Election Education Video Series to learn about the state’s election processes.
Secretary Jacobsen also announced the 2024 U.S. Constitution Contest, which is open to all Montana students in grades K-12. This year’s contest – “How does the Constitution preserve our freedom and why is that important to me?” – invites students to submit essays, poems, music, artwork, and other creative works.
Students, teachers, and parents interested in the Constitution Contest may visit the Secretary of State’s civics website for more information.
Secretary Jacobsen also invited Montana students in grades K-12 to participate in this fall’s Youth Vote Program, which will provide students with practical experience in the democratic process. More information on the Youth Vote Program will be released this fall.
“As Secretary of State, it’s rewarding to meet students and share the significance of the document we’re celebrating today,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “I love our Montana and U.S. Constitution, and I love this state and this country we are blessed to call home.”
